Sober Thoughts Today

I've been in a happy mood this week--I love the longer days and the promise of spring with its warm weather.  But my morning started with two sobering emails.

The first was from an internet friend who teaches at a Christian school in a Muslim land.  Her co-teacher was shot dead by one of his students this morning.  Just like that.  Teaching one minute, dead the next.  He'd been at this school for 6 years.  At first I didn't believe her email, but then I googled it.

Next email was from a coworker saying her son, the same age as mine, was hospitalized with kidney failure and she and her husband were in Congo, a long ways from him.  She asked if we would pray for him.

Yes, Lent is a time of sadness for many, a time of soul-searching, and of repentance.  I am indeed saddened by the news in my email box.  But I am encouraged by the key thought in Wednesday's Nouwen reading:  God Exists.  That pretty much puts both life's good and life's bad into perspective.
